Effects of an oil-based substrate (The Water Cleanser™) and bacterial additives on nitrogen and phosphorous dynamics in freshwater crayfish (Cherax cainii, Austin and Ryan 2002) aquaculture

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of an oil-based substrate, The Water Cleanser™ (TWC). first experiment studied effects two substrates different oil composition (TWC, TWC +), and a commercial bacterial additive (Bio-Aid) on concentrations nitrogen phosphorous in indoor aquaria. second TWC, additive, combination (TWC + B) phosphorous, phytoplankton abundance diversity outdoor freshwater crayfish ( Cherax cainii , Austin Ryan, Invertebr Syst 16:357–367, 2002) tanks. In experiment, concentration TAN decreased more rapidly with Bio-Aid, whilst maximum NO 2 -N 3 reduced substrates. orthophosphate was aquaria . TAN, -N, total phosphate not significantly affected by TWC. After addition B, there significant decrease nitrate phosphate, higher maintained than other treatments. Additionally, population Bacillus sp. found substrate surface. had no adverse or diversity, C. physiology, weight gain survival. effective bioremediators eutrophic water, B short term bioremediation promoting tank culture.
